Random Act of Kindness #47- Goodsearch

If you are reading this blog odds are you have searched the internet before. There are millions of search engines: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Well, the other day I found a different search engine, one that gives back the more you search. It is called http://www.goodsearch.com/ and it is incredible! All you do is create an account, click get started, pick any cause to donate to, and then use the web. Depending on what you do on the internet, a certain amount of money gets donated to the organization you picked. This search engine has raised a lot of money for different causes and all you have to do to help is use the internet! I used it and it's just as efficient as all the other search engines! Next time you use the internet take a few seconds and check out http://www.goodsearch.com/

Random Act of Kindness #46- Positive text

These past two days our school has been taking our final exams for our classes. For some, finals can be very stressful. My friend Ally spends a lot of time studying and preparing for her finals, and it sometimes stresses her out. Before one of her finals I send her the text pictured above to give her some encouragement. You know, it only takes 30 seconds to send someone a text that can make them smile for hours. If you know someone who is stressed, sad, angry, or anything but happy, send them a quick text and let them know you're thinking of them.

Compliment cards

I got a super cool story today! This kid said he saw this idea of writing out compliments on cards and passing them around, with the hopes that they continue to be passed along. He said, "I passed them around school... people reacted in different ways: happy, thankful, surprised, and some creeped out." He said majority really appreciated them, even though they were so out of the blue. The great thing about this is he saw them actually being passed around from person to person! It really does only take one person to start something, good job and great idea!

Paws Around The World

Paws Around the World by Annette & Alli, is a blog to “promote the adoptions of dogs and meet dogs from different shelters all over the world.” This blog has already received more than 4000 page views and is visited by about 200 people everyday. Annette & Alli have promoted adoption for about 25 dogs and 3 of them have been already been adopted! Just promoting the adoption of these unfortunate dogs is an amazing thing! If you are interested in the blog or even adopting a dog for yourself check out their blog at http://pawsaroundtheworld.blogspot.com/!  Plus, adopting an animal in need is a huge act of kindness! Thanks Annette and Alli, keep up the good work!

Free pencils!

How many times have you gotten to school just to realize that you don’t have a pencil? School causes enough stress without the panic of having to find, or borrow, a writing utensil. A small group of students decided to go around our school with extra pencils to see if anyone needed one. They went to each locker bay, and areas where students generally congregate. It may sound crazy, but you could honestly see how appreciative students were when they got a pencil. It’s always nice to lend a helping hand to someone who is in need. Hopefully they can pass on the kindness in their own type of way and start a chain reaction of generosity.

Helping with notes

Today I received a story from a kid named Tony. One of his classmates injured her wrist and it hurts her to write. Tony decided to help her out by taking notes for her while her wrist healed. He says, "Earlier this week, after I finished copying her notes down, .. she apologized to me for putting me through so much work to help her, but ... I really don't mind doing the work because I know I am helping her." I feel like this happens a lot. Not the random act itself, but the apologizing for being helped. Helping others is the right thing to do, no matter what. I'm beyond impressed with your selflessness Tony. Thank you for sharing this story.

"You said you were hungry"

Last night my brother's baseball team had a game. I was sitting down with these two kiddos and they started asking me about my blog. Once I explained it to them, they started listing off ideas of things for me to do. During our conversation the little boy mentioned that he was hungry. Without even saying a word the young girl sitting with us got up and walked away, and neither of us thought much about it. Within a few minutes she came running back with a bag of skittles, sat down, and handed them to the little boy. He said, "whose are these?" She just smiled and replied, "You said you were hungry, so I went to the concessions and bought you some Skittles. Chelsea, take a picture and you can put it on your blog!" This was the best part of my day. It is true, everyone can be nice and pay it forward, and I am so proud of both of them for doing it on their own.

Ascentra Credit Union

Earlier this week I was surprised by News Channel 8, Ascentra Credit Union, my teachers, my family members, and a couple friends with 300 dollars because of this blog. It was a huge surprise! Thank you everyone who has taken such interest in what we have been doing. Please continue to pay it forward, because we are making a difference.

Cookies to the fire station

I received an email about a random act of kindness that I had always wanted to try myself! She says, "we decided to give back a little bit to our community by bringing the fire department..cookies that we made." I think things like this are so cool. Firefighter, police officers, paramedics, and so many others work around the clock to ensure our safety, and that is why I love these stories. He added in the email, "we could tell he really appreciated that we took the time to thank them by the look on his face. It wasn’t much but it was an easy way to give back and spread the kindness." Way to go, this is awesome!

Recycling group

Some students involved with RAK delivered a thank you poster for the students that pick up recycling every week at our school. They have been working on this poster for a few days now and today was the day it was delivered. When they showed them the poster they made, their eyes lit up and every one of them started to thank the students. "They even wanted to hang the poster in the hallway" they said. Knowing that they made their day gave all of them a great sense of happiness and pride. Most people don’t know how much their service helps our school, and this poster really made them feel like they were important. What they do does makes a difference. The students talked with one of the teachers that work with the recycling group, and they learned that the money gained is donated to a local charity, which is even more incredible!

Random Act of Kindness #45- 100th post

Today's post is the 100th post made on this blog, and I think that's a big deal! In honor of 100 posts, I decided to make little treat bags with personal notes to all the people helping me out with this blog. I know that by myself I would not be able to keep the blog running like it does. They have all contributed in some way and made it easier for me, and for that I could not be more thankful! I appreciate all of you guys!

Stuco banquet

Last week the student council at my school had their end of the year banquet. Damaris is a freshman on student council, and to make the freshman feel more comfortable they get paired with a senior stuco member at the beginning of the year. Damaris's senior buddy was Olivia. Damaris says, "[she] has made this year so much more enjoyable! She's one of the sweetest girls I know, and I wanted to thank her for everything she has done for me." At the banquet the student council member spend time welcoming the new members and saying goodbye to the ones leaving. Damaris used this time to surprise Olivia with flowers and a card. "She was so happy! She gave me the warmest hug and thanked me graciously! It felt awesome to have someone who impacted my life so much thank me" Damaris said. Way to be thoughtful, again, Damaris! You're making so many smile!

Dedication to education

Keenan has continued to share the kindness! He knows how much teachers do for us and he knows that not all of them are given thanks for their dedication to education. So, Keenan decided to give back to several of his favorite teachers. "They've done so much for me" he says, "especially with the last few weeks of school coming up" He decided to bring the teachers donuts in morning in hopes that they know he appreciates all the care they have for their students. By the looks of these pictures I can tell they enjoyed the surprise, way to go Keenan! Keep it up!

Hungry Hobo

Siblings can be a pain in the butt sometimes, but at the end of the day we love them. Today I received a story from Kaitlyn who knows exactly what I mean. She mentions that her brother and her are not the closest of siblings, but she loves him no matter what. She said when she called her mom to see what he liked from Hungry Hobo Kailtlyn's mom was surprised because Kaitlyn and her brother are usually fighting with one another. She says "When I got to his school and gave him his lunch he was so thrilled. I have never seen a bigger smile on his face." Kaitlyn says, "My hope is that.. he will understand that I love him." She also hopes that her brother decides to do the same for their younger sister one day. Simple reminders like this mean a lot, good job Kaitlyn.

Mysterious M

Today I received an anonymous story that made me smile. This kid is involved in the drama department within their school and on the closing night of their musical they were all surprised! This person says "We all were crying together.. but then something [strange] happened. Audience member usually don't buy the customary gifts for us unless we're friends/family members. But a random stranger who signed himself off as "M" on every note card gave a gift and a card with comment about [our] performance on it... everyone received one."  Which I think is absolutely incredible! The story ends with "These people changed my life.... I truly love you all." Being a junior in high school myself, I have started to realize how much happens so quickly. One day you're having tryouts, auditions, or interviews and the next thing you know you're saying goodbye and wishing you could start it all over again. Not going to lie, high school can suck sometimes; however, having a group of people around you to share it with makes it worth every single second. Whoever you are "M", that gesture is something nobody there will every forget. You made the ending and goodbyes a little sweeter and easier. I'm so glad this story was sent to me.

Teacher appreciation

This previous week was teacher appreciation week! Today I received a story from Carson who decided he was going to show one of his favorite middle school teachers some appreciation. He wrote a letter to him that he says "contained my personal thanks for his ability to enhance the already active interest for history within my self, as well as wishing him luck in his future teaching endeavors."  Teachers do a lot for us students, whether we realize it or not. We spend majority of our time at school with our teachers who help shape us into the people we are today. I bet Mr. C loved his letter and I hope all teachers know that they are appreciated! Great idea Carson!

You're not alone

Being single in a group of couples can be kind of a bummer. I got a story today from Keenan, who remembers how awkward he felt being by himself in a group of couples last year during homecoming. This year, he wasn't by himself, however, one of his close friends was. He said she was kind of nervous about going stag in their group, so he came up with the idea to make her feel more comfortable. Keenan decided he was going to get her a corsage. Keenan says, “She is one of the nicest girls I know and if anyone deserves a little something to brighten their day, or something to make them feel less awkward, it’s her.”  He surprised her with the flower when they were taking pictures before prom. “She was so happy when I surprised her, seeing her smile warmed my heart and it made me so happy that I could cheer her up on such a big night”  he said. I can tell she enjoyed her surprise based on the picture. You're a great friend Keenan and I bet you made her prom even more memorable!

Random Act of Kindness #44- Happy Mother's Day!

Today is Mother's day; a day where mothers are thanked for everything they do for us. Well, today I had a day full of softball games, so my mom spent her whole mother's day with me at the ballpark. Since we weren't able to really do anything special for her, I went out and bought flowers, a cookie, and a card for my mother to find this morning when she woke up. It wasn't anything too special, but she loved it, which is all that matters. I hope all mothers had a great day today, because you all deserve it! Happy Mother's Day!

Random Act of Kindness #43- Clean up!

Yesterday, our environmental biology class took a field trip to the creek. After we had collected all the data we needed, a couple of us decided to collect some other things. We walked up and down the creek for a good 30 minutes picking up all the trash we could see. We were so determined that I eventually ended up just getting into the water to pick up the pieces we couldn't reach from the edge. We ended up filling a whole bag, and other classmates of ours did as well! It's not a hard thing to do; if you see trash laying around, pick it up! Help clean up our world, one piece of trash at a time!

Forever a hero

This past Friday was Damaris's father's last day in uniform. She says, "In the Army, you must turn your uniform in 30 days before your official retirement. After 24 years of his life sacrificing so much to the Army, you could say it was emotional." She said he didn't want his family to do anything special for him, but Damaris said her family couldn't not do anything for him! When he got home from work that day they treated him to dinner at his favorite restaurant. "It was his last dinner in uniform ever, and it was pretty special." Kindness can be shown in many different ways. It can be a gift, a surprise, spending time, a smile, or just showing someone how much you appreciate them. This surprise dinner, in honor of their father's last day in uniform, was just that. He will forever be a hero, even without the uniform. Thanks for sharing Damaris, your family is incredible.

The Golden Rule

Last week I was tricked, but it was a good kind of trick. I received a message from Damaris asking if I could talk to her after school. I walked into the classroom after school like asked, and I didn't see her. Instead I saw a kid named Collin sitting there with a bag of Whitey's and a note. When he said it was for me the first thing I said was, "Really? Are you sure?" I was not expecting it at all! Collin said he did it because I've done so many nice things without asking for anything in return, and hearing that made me smile from ear to ear. Collin said, "I chose to do ice cream because when I was little, my parents would randomly surprise me by buying ice cream and I remember how happy it would make me. Just the feeling of being surprised and knowing that someone else was thinking about me was enough to bring a smile to my face, but the ice cream also helped." Collin surely brought a smile to my face and made my heart very happy. He says, "Karma shouldn't always have to be a negative connotation, if you are kind to people, that kindness should find it's way back." I couldn't agree with him more. Thank you so much Collin, you're a great friend and even better person.

Making a meal

The story I received today comes from a kid named Tony. He lives next door to someone who does not have much family around, so every week he drops off a home cooked meal for her. This is the meal he delivered this week. Although he does this for her often, this time was a little different. His neighbor's father is sick and not doing so well right now. Tony says, "When she thanked me for the food I knew it meant a lot." Hard times are a little easier when surrounded by support and love and Tony is giving her just that. Thanks for the incredible story Tony!

Arcade game

The other night a girl named Audrey went to the movie theaters. She had some time to waste before the movie, so she decided to go check out the game room. Two little girls walked in a few seconds later and Audrey says, "I saw one of their eyes light up and she yelled, 'Oh my gosh, I want one so bad!' at one of the prizes in the claw machine." Hearing and seeing the excitement in the little girls reminded Audrey of her brother and her when they were younger because they always got this excited about the claw machines. Audrey noticed that she had extra change, so she secretly placed a bunch of quarters around the different arcade games. Audrey says, "As I left the arcade I could distinctly hear one of the girls yell, 'I found some money!'" Audrey, I can only imagine how many smiles you caused by doing this! Incredible!
